In 1923, German-born Joseph Pilates brought his unique method of physical and mental conditioning to the United States. His study of yoga and the martial arts... his work with physicians and nurses led to the development of his conditioning system.
Pilates is a specialized form of exercise influenced by Hatha yoga, gymnastics, modern dance, and other forms of movement. The primary focus of Pilates exercise is the development of the “core” torso muscles - lower back, lower abdominals, and pelvic floor muscles - through a series of exercises that are performed slowly and with mental focus.
Pilates is a low-impact, deep muscle conditioning method that strengthens, stretches, and balances the entire body. It specifically targets the “core” muscle groups correcting alignment and enabling the body to move more efficiently.
Pilates can increase your flexibility and agility as well as help you obtain optimal core control. Based on proper breathing, good posture, and intense concentration, the exercises are performed on a mat or with specially designed Pilates equipment. Pilates has been described as a flowing motion outward from a strong center. Your muscles are stretched and strengthened uniformly, resulting in long, sleek muscles rather than bulky muscles. By learning proper posture stance and correct body alignment, you will soon feel and look taller and leaner. Pilates is a different way to look at exercise.
